 We encourage your donations ...

BDSRA has entered into a program with Car Company, LLC. This program allows the donation of autos, trucks, boats, RVs and trailers to BDSRA.

When BDSRA is notified of a donation, we in turn contact Car Company, LLC. They contact a towing agency, who in turn contacts the donor within four business days to schedule an appointment for pick up. In addition, Car Program will make a customer service call on the fourth business day.

The tow driver will give the donor a receipt from BDSRA and will pick up the auto (or boat, RV, etc.), keys and title. The donor should retain the donation receipt for their records. It is an important document necessary for any available federal income tax deduction.

As you are most likely aware, the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 will alter the rules for contributions of used motor vehicles, boats and planes effective January 1, 2005. Final IRS regulations have yet to be dopted. However, here is a short synopsis of the new legislation as it
stands: If the claimed value of the donated motor vehicle, boat or plane exceeds $500 and the item is sold by the charitable organization, the taxpayer is limited to the gross sale. The new legislation does not affect donors claiming $500 or less and for those donors who are not claiming a tax deduction.

How will this new legislation change Car Program procedure? Our existing procedure will remain the same with the addition of one step. Car Program will mail a postcard to each donor whose gift generates a gross sale in excess of $500. In compliance with the new tax legislation, our
postcard will provide the donor with the gross sale price of their donation as well as certify that the vehicle was sold at "arms length" between unrelated parties.

After the car, boat, truck, etc. is picked up, Car Company will sell the donation at auction or directly to a salvage yard.

If Car Company is unable to accept the donation, they will contact the donor as soon as possible to respectfully decline the donation - usually within 24 to 48 hours.
